Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my total work hours for the week?

Enter your start and end times for each day you worked, then subtract any unpaid break time. For example: Monday 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM minus 30 minutes break = 8.0 hours. Repeat for each day and sum them. This calculator does it automatically — just enter each day's times and break duration.

How is overtime calculated?

Under the federal FLSA, overtime is paid at 1.5× your regular rate for hours worked over 40 in a single workweek. Formula: overtime hours × (hourly rate × 1.5). Example: 47 hours worked at $20/hr — regular pay: 40 × $20 = $800; overtime: 7 × $30 = $210; gross pay = $1,010. California, Alaska, and Nevada also have daily overtime for hours over 8 in a single day.

How do I convert hours to a decimal?

Divide the minutes by 60 and add to the hours. Examples: 8 hours 30 minutes = 8.5 hours. 7 hours 45 minutes = 7.75 hours. 6 hours 20 minutes = 6.333 hours. 5 hours 15 minutes = 5.25 hours. Most payroll systems use decimal hours. This calculator shows both the hours:minutes format and the decimal equivalent.

How much is time and a half?

Time and a half means 1.5× your regular hourly rate. Common examples: $15/hr → overtime $22.50/hr. $18/hr → overtime $27.00/hr. $20/hr → overtime $30.00/hr. $25/hr → overtime $37.50/hr. $30/hr → overtime $45.00/hr. Multiply your rate by 1.5 for any other rate.

How do I calculate bi-weekly pay from hours?

Multiply your weekly gross pay by 2. If you work 45 hours at $22/hr: regular = 40 × $22 = $880; overtime = 5 × $33 = $165; weekly gross = $1,045; bi-weekly gross = $2,090. Most employers pay bi-weekly (every 2 weeks), resulting in 26 pay periods per year. Monthly gross ≈ weekly × 4.333; annual ≈ weekly × 52.

Does break time count as hours worked?

Short rest breaks (under 20 minutes) are generally considered paid time under the FLSA and count as hours worked. Bona fide meal breaks (typically 30 minutes or more) where you are completely relieved of duties are unpaid and do not count as hours worked. Enter only your unpaid break time in the break field — this is what gets deducted from your total hours.

What states have daily overtime rules?

Most states follow federal FLSA overtime rules (overtime only after 40 hours/week). However, a few states have daily overtime requirements: California — overtime at 1.5× after 8 hours/day and double-time (2×) after 12 hours/day; Alaska — overtime after 8 hours/day; Nevada — overtime after 8 hours/day for employees earning below 1.5× the state minimum wage. Some industries (healthcare, transportation) have different overtime rules. If you work in California, Alaska, or Nevada, track daily hours carefully — you may be owed overtime even if your weekly total is under 40 hours.

How do I calculate my annual salary from hours worked?

Annual salary = hourly rate × hours worked per week × 52 weeks. Standard full-time (40 hours): $20/hr × 40 × 52 = $41,600/year. With regular overtime (5 hrs/wk at 1.5×): $20 × 40 × 52 + $30 × 5 × 52 = $41,600 + $7,800 = $49,400/year. For irregular schedules, use your average weekly hours. This calculator shows bi-weekly and annual projections based on your current week's hours. To convert annual salary to hourly, divide by 2,080 (40 hrs × 52 wks).
