Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate are these calculators?
Our federal tax calculations use the official 2026 IRS brackets from IRS Revenue Procedure 2025-32. State data uses the best available 2025 figures as placeholders while we finalize 2026 state data. Results are estimates — always consult a tax professional for exact advice.
What's the difference between effective and marginal tax rates?
Your effective tax rate is the average rate you pay on all your income — total taxes divided by gross income. Your marginal rate is the rate applied to your last dollar of income. Most people have a much lower effective rate than their marginal bracket suggests.
Do I need to create an account?
No. Zero. Nada. OwnThatCheck is 100% free with no registration required. Your calculations stay in your browser — we don't store any personal or financial data.
What states are currently supported?
All 50 US states are fully supported, including California, Texas, New York, Florida, and all other states. Each calculator has a dedicated page for every state with accurate local tax data.
How often is the tax data updated?
Federal data is updated when the IRS publishes new revenue procedures, typically each fall. We target an update within 30 days of official IRS publication. State data is updated when official state revenue departments release new figures.
